Understanding Kitchener-Waterloo’s Green Bin & Waste Disposal Rules
Let's chat about something that keeps our community clean and green: the green bin program and waste disposal rules. Whether you're a long-time local or new to the area, here's a handy guide to help you navigate waste management like a pro.
What's the Green Bin Program All About?
The green bin program is our region's way of turning organic waste into valuable compost. By tossing your food scraps and certain paper products into the green bin, you're helping reduce landfill waste and promoting a healthier environment.
What Goes in the Green Bin?
You can chuck in:
Food Scraps: Think fruits, veggies, meat, bones, dairy, bread, and even coffee grounds.
Soiled Paper Products: Paper towels, napkins, paper plates, and greasy pizza boxes are all good to go.
Pet Waste: Yes, you read that right! Bagged pet waste is accepted.
Houseplants and Flowers: Got wilted blooms? They can go in too.
For a full list, check out the Region of Waterloo's waste management page.
What Stays Out?
Keep these out of your green bin:
Plastic Bags: Even if they're labeled "biodegradable."
Compostable Plastics: Items like cutlery, cups, and coffee pods labeled as "compostable" aren't accepted.
Diapers and Hygiene Products: These belong in the regular trash.
Lining Your Green Bin
To keep things neat:
Paper Bags: You can use paper liner bags or even repurpose paper takeout bags.
Certified Compostable Bags: Look for bags with certified compostable logos.
Remember, regular plastic or "biodegradable" bags aren't accepted.
Collection Day Tips
Timing: Set your green bin out by 7 a.m. on your collection day.
Weight Limit: Each bin shouldn't weigh more than 23 kg (50 lbs).
Placement: Ensure your bin is visible and accessible—avoid hiding it behind cars or snowbanks.
If you need a new or additional green bin, they're available (free of charge) at:
Cambridge Waste Management Administration: 201 Savage Drive, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Waterloo Waste Management Administration: 925 Erb Street West (Gate 1), Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Beyond the Green Bin: Other Waste Disposal
Blue Box Recycling: For plastics, glass, metals, and paper. Note that as of March 2, 2024, the Region of Waterloo no longer manages the blue box program. For details, visit Circular Materials' Waterloo Region page.
Garbage: Regular trash is collected bi-weekly. Be mindful of weight limits and avoid prohibited items.
Hazardous Waste: Items like batteries, paints, and chemicals shouldn't go in the trash. Drop them off at designated waste management sites.
For any disposal doubts, the Region's Waste Whiz tool is a lifesaver. Just type in the item, and it'll tell you exactly where it goes.
By following these guidelines, you're playing a part in keeping Kitchener-Waterloo clean and green. Thanks for doing your bit!
